Photon Energy designed and installed a 12kWp solar PV louvre system alongside a 52 kWp roof top PV system at the Bishop Centre retail park in Taplow, Berkshire.
Details of the installation
Photon Energy designed and installed a solar PV louvre system using 188 bespoke Romag monocrystalline glass laminates in 47 bays on the front elevation of units 2-9. The modules were mounted on an aluminium carrier system. In addition to the very visible PV louvres, we also installed 160 monocrystalline Perlight PLM-250 solar PV modules on the roof of the TK Maxx store and on the adjacent Nike unit, using K2 aluminium rails fixed with speed clips as the mounting system.
Firstly, the frames for the louvre system had to be assembled on the ground, and DC cables for the glass laminates were run through the frames and the torsion tubes. A telehandler was used to lift the 120kg assembled frames into position. Fitting the frames into the glulam (engineered wood) fascia was a difficult operation as there was very little tolerance around the frames within the glulam openings. The process was further complicated as the operatives had to work at a height of 8 metres from a scissor lift platform.
The main contractor was Bowmer and Kirkland, who reinstated the existing Bishop Centre for owners Land Securities to form a new £20m shopping centre. It contains 10 units with over 400 car parking spaces led by a 5110 sq metre Tesco store.
