Photon Energy installed a 51 kWp solar photovoltaic (PV) system for the Coventry University School of Science and Health, working alongside NG Bailey and BAM. The building opened to students in October 2017.

Details of the installation

Photon Energy were awarded a contract by NG Bailey to install a 51 kWp solar PV system for Coventry University’s new £37 million Science & Health building, built by BAM Construct UK. Having won the contract, our installation team had to mobilise quickly in order to meet the University’s tight timescale that required a major part of the roofworks to be completed during the academic summer break of 2016.

SunPower 327W monocrystalline modules were selected in order to provide the maximum energy generation from the limited roof space. 156 modules were fixed to a K2 System D-Dome mounting system and then connected to 
Zeverlution inverters. Zeversolar provided a Zevercom datalogger and a Solarfox display unit for the reception area of the new building.

The system is expected to generate around 40,010 kWh of energy per annum and save 20.7 tonnes of CO2 emissions each year.

Coventry University’s School of Science and Health building consolidates the existing teaching and research facilities into a new five-storey, 120,000 square feet building that houses state-of-the-art healthcare simulation, research and ‘super-lab’ environments. The total cost of constructing and equipping the building has been in excess of £60 million.

The installation of the solar PV array, helped the building to achieve the renewable energy target required in order to gain an ‘excellent’ rating from the Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM).
