Persimmon Homes - Aylestone Road

Photon Energy installed a 51 kWp solar photovoltaic (PV) array on the roof of a four storey apartment block at Aylestone Road, Leicester during the summer of 2010. The block of 32 apartments was built by Persimmon Homes for Leicestershire Housing Association.

Details of the installation

The PV system was installed as a single array on the roof of the four storey apartment block. The PV modules were fixed using Schuco mounting brackets which were ballasted with concrete paving slabs to secure them on the roof.  This meant the roof covering did not need to be penetrated.  The modules were mounted at a 10 degree pitch in order to maximise the number of modules that could be accommodated on the roof.

The PV system is connected to the landlord’s supply in the block to provide power for communal lighting and lifts.  The PV system will generate around 39,000 kWh of electricity and save 17 tonnes of CO2 emissions each year.

Andy Gilliver, Design Co-ordinator for Persimmon Homes, said:

“Photon Energy played a massive part in achieving the renewable requirements for this particular site whilst also meeting our tight deadlines.”
