Photon Energy's work for innovative Parc Eirin project

Working closely with Sero Homes, Photon Energy won the tender from Morganstone to install PV, battery storage and EV charging points for the new development at Parc Eirin.

The synergies between solar PV, battery storage systems and EV charging coupled with decreasing costs are making the adoption of these technologies, as a holistic package, an increasingly sensible option for new homes. This new development of over 200 low carbon homes at Parc Eirin aims to showcase these technologies, amongst a suite of others to showcase the home of the future.

Solar and Battery Storage

The Parc Erin project is built with reams of sophisticated technology, working together to lower both energy costs and carbon footprint in new home developments. Each home is fitted with between 4-18 integrated solar PV panels from Viridian Solar to provide free, clean electricity for the electric heating systems. In addition, each home is fitted with 5kWh of battery storage capacity to maximise the amount of solar energy which can be used directly in the home by storing an excess generated in the day for use later in the evenings.

Three-Phase Electricity

Nearly all houses in the UK are supplied with 100A, single phase electricity supply. As electric vehicles and the electrification of heat are an inevitable part of the future, the electricity infrastructure will need to be adapted to accommodate this change. A major innovation in the development at Parc Eirin is that each home will be provided a 3-phase electricity supply to ensure there is sufficient power available to charge electric vehicles as well as providing sufficient electricity for heating purposes.

This scheme is the UK pilot for Western Power’s trial of three phase power into homes, and is believed to be the largest new build example of this in the UK.

Morganstone Ltd state: “With the help of the Welsh government funding, Parc Eirin is the largest low carbon development of its kind in the UK. The project is an ambitious and innovative scheme that will change the design and sustainability of homes for the future.
